Why am I inspired to do what I do?
Born in California and raised in Texas, I was deeply influenced by my family’s summer trips to California, where we hiked in the Sierra Nevada and along the Pacific Coast. Nature has been a source of inspiration and perspective for me ever since.
I spent my college years in Philadelphia earning a degree in finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Afterwards, I worked briefly as an options trader on Wall Street, where I quickly discovered that “winner take all” capitalism wasn’t for me.
Heeding the call of the West Coast and its rugged beauty, in 1999, I moved to Seattle. I co-founded an investment advisory business for hedge funds, where I was the general manager for the next eight years.
During this time, I discovered an inner zeal for more sustainable, healthy lifestyles, sparked by an unexpected encounter.
Walking to work one fall day, I found my path blocked by massive protests against the World Trade Organization (WTO). I detoured around, but my interest was piqued, and later that day I followed the protests through the city. This was a big wake-up call for me that capitalism is not working for everyone.
I began learning about social and economic justice and discovered an emerging passion for helping communities thrive. My world began expanding rapidly as I dove into permaculture, nutrition, alternative medicine, natural building and woodworking, renewable power, international travel, and much more.
All of this helped prepare me for a major career shift. In 2007, I left my hedge fund career behind, and was soon offered the opportunity to merge my investment expertise with my passion for sustainability and social justice by joining Natural Investments, leaders in Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) since 1985. Wanting to help my clients optimize all aspects of their financial lives, I earned my Certified Financial Planner™ designation, which requires extensive education in retirement planning, investments, taxes, estate planning, and insurance.
I support the local investing movement which encourages people to invest money and build relationships within their communities.
In 2008, while living in Port Townsend, Washington, I was invited to join a group of citizens that wanted to invest their money locally. We created the pioneering Local Investing Opportunities Network (LION), which has drawn nationwide attention for its success in connecting investors with local small businesses and nonprofits, keeping investment money in the community, and building a more prosperous local economy. To share the best practices I learned from this and other successful initiatives, I created the non-profit Local Investing Resource Center, an education and advocacy website dedicated to helping local investing take root in communities around the country.
My vision is a more just and sustainable economy for the world.
I believe that every human and our civilization as a whole has incredible potential, given a fair opportunity for all. By investing for the social good of humankind and the environmental good of our planet, we help create the world we want to live in. That’s why my passion and my mission is to help progressive investors make a better world and achieve their long-term financial goals using Socially Responsible Investing.
I offer two types of services:
- Portfolio Management for investment assets of $250k+. I work with you to design and implement a customized, diversified portfolio that reflects your personal values and priorities as well as your financial goals. I monitor and refine your portfolio over time, bringing you new opportunities that I think will be a good fit for you. In addition to stock and bond funds that are screened for social and environmental issues, we will explore “alternative” impact investments when appropriate, including:
- Income-producing renewable energy generation facilities
- Community development loans that support affordable housing, education, small businesses, and more
- Private equity funds that invest in promising high-growth companies working towards the green economy of the future
- Regenerative agriculture, organic farmland, and sustainable forestry funds
I am passionate about fossil fuel divestment and investing in green solutions to climate change such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, environmental remediation, pollution control, green buildings, water & waste technologies, and more!
Each quarter, I provide you with performance reports and our original Natural Investments newsletter. Fees are charged quarterly and are based on a percentage (approximately 1% per year) of the assets I manage. I also provide discounted financial planning and retirement projections upon request.
If you have investment assets under $250k, I want to support you to invest with your values, too. E-mail me and I will do my best to provide you with informal guidance and/or referrals to other advisors that can help you.
- Financial Planning consultations on an hourly basis. I analyze your financial situation to help you plan effectively and make key decisions about investments, taxes, budgeting, and more. I can generate long-term retirement and other savings projections that can give you more certainty about the future. My standard rate is $250 per hour, and I provide estimates upon request.
I work from my home office in upcountry Maui, Hawaii. We can arrange personal meetings when needed, as I travel several times per year to the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Bellingham, Port Townsend, Whidbey Island), once per year to California and the East Coast, and to other locations across the USA as needed.
Do you have any questions about my services? Want to find out if we are a good fit for working with each other? Please contact me to set up a free initial consultation via e-mail or phone. I look forward to hearing from you!
